Majik Shot Skeet Shooting Review

Yesterday at Walmart, in the Sporting Goods section, there was a large display of miniature table and over the door sports sets for kids, produced by EastPoint Sports and labeled under the "Majik" brand. One set was a "skeet shooting" set, consisting of both an electronic target and a foam dart blaster. Obviously, I had to buy one for science.

The Examination

Starting with the blaster: it's a single shot, muzzle-loading blaster, in the shape of a rifle. However, it's only about 16" in length, and clearly meant for smaller children. Even so, it performs well. There's also a dart holder that can mount to the side of the blaster, or go on your belt.

The dart holder crushes the foam, though.

On the inside, the blaster contains a simple direct plunger setup, with a 3/4" ID tube and 2.5" of draw - equal to ~1.1 cubic inches (~18.1 cubic centimeters) of displaced air. Aside from the dart peg and its supports, there are no obstructions to speak of in the barrel. I do wonder about the durability of the priming tab, but it could be either reinforced, or ditched completely in favor of a pullback mechanism.

Simple and satisfactory.

In terms of performance, the blaster can only fire the included darts 35-40' max, at an angle. With Elite streamlines, however, those numbers double. So the blaster isn't short on power, just on good darts.

As for the target, the functionality is actually decent (see manual HERE). After setting the game mode (target tracking paths), number of players (1-4), and the difficulty/target speed, you have 3 rounds with 3 targets each.

It's easier just to make a video to show what happens. Notice the sound it makes if the target flies off without being hit. All that's missing is a little dog that pops up and mocks you for missing!

If the target is hung as indicated, and you shoot the targets during the time they're lit, then the sensors will detect the hit the vast majority of the time. This was tested with everything from a pitiful Tek 3 blaster to one of my Doomsayers (using slug-style stefans).

Verdict

I had no idea what to expect, as this blaster simply came out of nowhere. But after extensive testing, I have to give the Majik Shot Skeet Shooting set two thumbs up. For $20 in store (and as of this writing, on sale for $14 online), you get a good, if not exceptional, single-shot blaster that can shoot as far as Nerf Elite pistols, and an electronic target that not only works well, but allows up to four players to compete against each other.
